With comprehensive auto insurance you will have damages to you vehicle paid for regardless if you were at fault, an unknown party or another driver was at fault, or if it was an act of God. Comprehensive auto insurance will only pay up to the fair market value of your vehicle. You are not required by any state to have comprehensive auto insurance, but you will want to get it if your car is currently financed or leased. You will also have to meet a deductible of some kind before your insurer will begin to pay for any repairs to your insured vehicle. The higher the deductible you choose, then the lower you insurance premiums will be.
